If you have been following me on social media for the last few years, you will know that I am deeply passionate about beautiful floral arrangements. I developed this passion when I was 19 years old. However, one day I realized that I hadn’t been able to find any Afro-Descendant Florist in the city, and that surprised me. It wasn’t until many years later that I finally met Rachelle.
As a Black History Month tribute, I would like to introduce you to Rachelle Demosthene, owner of Pouvoir des Fleurs, and making a significant impact in the floral industry…
Petrona: tell us about yourself, Rachelle…
Rachelle: thank you for having me Petrona! I used to work as a corporate professional for 18 years, where I had a successful career. However, I realized that my true passion was floral decor. Although I achieved a lot in my corporate job and even rose to the top position, I always felt a sense of emptiness. Having grown up in an entrepreneurial family, I always knew that I wanted to start my own business someday. Then, when my favorite florist announced that he was selling his shop, Pouvoir des Fleurs, I saw it as a great opportunity and acquired the business.
Petrona: Rachelle, wow – that is a tremendous story. I share your same feelings. I was in the corporate automotive business but wasn’t happy. Good for you for choosing yourself, and your happiness, and congratulations on taking a calculated risk. Now, how did your family receive the news?
Rachelle: well Petrona, everyone in my family knew that one day I would run a business. They weren’t surprised and were very supportive.
Petrona: good for you! I know many women who start their businesses and often face criticism from their family members. Was a floral business on your radar for a business?
Rachelle: I always loved creating nice decor. Whenever the was an opportunity, I would jump on it and try to enhance the atmosphere either with accessories, gifts, or a complete decor.
Petrona: Rachelle, I find you to be very inspiring. Tell me, what advice would you give to a fellow Entrepreneur?
Rachelle: always plan your next move carefully, and always have a next move…
Petrona: thank you so much for your time, we appreciate you and know that you have a very busy Valentine’s season coming up, so we will let you go for now…
Rachelle has been trained and coached by some of the best in the industry including Preston Bailey a globally celebrated event designer. For more information on her journey, follow Pouvoir des Fleurs on Instagram.
